Riding public transport set to cost more

The cost of public transport is to rise from January 1, Transport Minister Christos Spirtzis said Monday, backtracking on his pledge that commuters would not be affected by recent tax increases demanded by Greece’s creditors.

Spirtzis said there would be a 10 percent rise due to the increase in value-added tax. As a result, the cost of a regular ticket, currently 1.20 euros, will increase to 1.30 euros.

The government aims to limit the price rise for travelcards, Spirtzis said. A five-day travelcard costs 10 euros.
