Municipal police back on the streets

Municipal police officers will return to the streets of Athens on Friday after an absence of more than two years.

The force was disbanded in the summer of 2013 as the then government sought to make up the numbers needed for the civil service mobility scheme.

The City of Athens said that until October 25 municipal police officers will be handing out leaflets aimed at increasing awareness about what the force’s role will be and encouraging residents to cooperate with them in a bid to protect public property and make Athens a friendlier city.

From October 26, they will resume their normal duties, issuing parking tickets and fines for other violations.
