Border guards investigated

The Hellenic Police is conducting an investigation into allegations by human rights groups that in recent weeks there have been up to 20 cases of border guards in Evros, northeastern Greece, robbing migrants and forcing them back into Turkey.

Appeals court prosecutor Eleftherios Michailidis ordered the probe, which will be carried out by the force’s internal affairs department in northern Greece, after receiving complaints from nongovernmental organizations that help refugees who reach the country.

Michailidis has asked the inspectors to establish whether there have been instances of abuse of power, breach of duty, robbery or any other offenses.
