New civil protection chief appointed

Yiannis Kapakis, a brigadier in the Greek fire service, was appointed the new head of the Civil Protection Authority on Thursday.
Kapakis was recommended for the position by the Alternate Minister for Citizens’ Protection Nikos Toskas and his appointment was approved by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
Apart from the fire service, the 57-year-old has served in the EMAK special rescue unit and taught crisis management at the School of Public Administration. In 2014, he was elected as a municipal councilor on the Cycladic island of Andros.
