Motorist shot trying to stop bank robbers

Two armed robbers who had just raided a central Athens bank yesterday morning managed to make their escape in hijacked vehicles after a passing van driver tried to knock them off their getaway motorbike. Triandafyllos Karageorgiou, 42, saw the gunmen run out of an Alpha Bank branch at 56 Tritis Septemvriou Street, near Omonia Square, clutching their loot, and jump onto a motorbike. Realizing that he had witnessed the tail end of an armed robbery, he veered his van out of the traffic and got in the way of the bike. The robbers immediately got off and shot at Karageorgiou, wounding him in the leg. The one gunman then stopped a passing motorcyclist and took her scooter at gunpoint, while his accomplice stole a pickup truck in the same fashion. By late yesterday, it was unclear how much money had been stolen.
