As damage is assessed, woman missing in flood found dead
Authorities over the weekend sought to assess the damage wreaked by heavy rain, as the body of a 43-year-old woman whose car was swept away in a flash flood on Thursday in Kamatero, western Athens, was found in Freattyda, close to Piraeus.
Residents of Freattyda notified authorities after spotting a woman’s body on the shore early Saturday. The body was transferred to the nearby Tzanneio Hospital, where the woman’s husband was called in to identify her. The 43-year-old had been on her way to collect her two children from school on Thursday when her car was swept away.
In Attica, but also in Ilia and Achaia in the Peloponnese, meanwhile, efforts got under way over the weekend to repair the damage to farmland wreaked by downpours.
A major recovery effort was also ongoing on the Saronic island of Hydra after flooding damaged roads and seaside businesses.
