Council of State to decide on Stamati’s bail appeal

The Council of State is due to decide on Friday whether the wife of jailed ex-defense minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos has to return to custody due to being unable to pay her bail.

Viki Stamati’s lawyers argue that their client is unable to come up with the 50,000 euros needed for her conditional release because of the financial restrictions in place due to capital controls.

Her lawyers have appealed the government’s decision not to allow greater time for the money to be raised while capital controls are in place.

The country’s highest administrative court will hear from representatives of the Justice and Finance ministries, as well as Stamati’s legal team, before deciding on whether she can remain on conditional release or has to return to custody.
