Probe ordered into MP assault

The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Athens on Friday ordered a fast-track investigation into the attack on New Democracy deputy Giorgos Koumoutsakos during a Pontic rally outside Parliament on Thursday.

According to authorities one of the main suspects being sought by police was a Golden Dawn municipal counselor candidate in 2014.

Koumoutsakos was attacked by a crowd in front of Parliament on the sidelines of the rally. He was punched by at least one person, had his jacket ripped and his glasses knocked away.

After Thursday's rally the conservative party demanded the resignation of Education Minister Nikos Filis, following the government official’s comments regarding historical events.
