High court rejects Stamati appeal

Greece’s Council of State on Friday rejected an appeal by Viki Stamati, wife of former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, for a 50,000 euro bail payment to be waived.

Stamati, 52, was sentenced to 12 years behind bars over money laundering charges, but saw her prison sentence commuted to house arrest on October 14, following several appeals.

Stamati and her defense team have argued that she remained unable to raise funds for the bail to be paid.

Following Friday’s court decision, Stamati will have to post the 50,000 euro bail or return either prison or the Dromokaiteio psychiatric hospital where she was being treated for depression prior to her early release.
