To Potami critizes defense minister over saint badges on uniforms

To Potami criticized Defense Minister Panos Kammenos on Friday for issuing instructions to members of the armed forces that allow them to sew the images of the patron saints of the army, navy and air force onto their uniforms.

“Not even the junta or the [Ioannis] Metaxas dictatorship had thought of such a thing,” said the centrist party in its statement, which accused the government of trying to appeal to nationalists.

Kammenos responded with a one-line statement advising Potami’s leadership to discuss the matter with their “spiritual adviser or God, if they believe in such things.”

The army’s patron saint is Aghia Varvara, the navy’s Aghios Nikolaos and the air force’s Archangel Michael.
