City of Athens launches cleanup of central squares

The City of Athens is to embark over the next few months on a 2.5-million-euro program to tidy up the city center.

The municipal council approved the scheme, which will focus on the areas of Syntagma, Omonia and Monastiraki, last week. It entails repairs to sidewalks, the planting of new trees and other greenery, replacing damaged dumpsters, improved lighting and the removal of illegally parked or abandoned vehicles.

The local authority has also pledged to strictly enforce regulations governing where cafes, bars and restaurants can place tables and chairs with the aim of making public spaces more attractive and accessible.
