The testimony of New Democracy MP Giorgos Koumoutsakas in connection with an assault against him earlier this month will be delivered in a court hearing the case in February, it was decided on Thursday.

One of the defendants, a 24-year-old man who can be seen in a video of the incident holding Koumoutsakos in a tight grasp as others punched the MP but leading him away from the fray, has claimed that he had intended to protect him and had not been participating in the assault.

The head of the country’s Federation of Pontic Greeks, Giorgos Varymatidis, backed the defendant, who is a Pontic Greek.

Koumoutsakos was assaulted during a rally by Pontic Greeks in Athens on November 5 by suspects believed to have links to Golden Dawn.
