‘Tight-fisted’ husband killed wife over repairs

A bank employee from Xanthi was sentenced yesterday to 21 years’ imprisonment for murdering his wife after a heated argument over how their flat should be redecorated. Before sentencing, Theodoros Karapouikidis, 46, explained to the Komotini court that he liked his house to be in order. «It was an unfortunate moment,» he said of the fatal shotgun shooting of his 39-year-old wife, Athanassia, in September 2001. Just before the murder, the couple had a fight over refurbishment in progress at their Xanthi house, with Karapouikidis objecting to the cost of the work and the way in which it was being done. His wife broke off the argument and sought refuge in the bathroom, whereupon Karapouikidis grabbed his shotgun, followed the woman and shot her dead. Karapouikidis’s father testified in court that his son was extremely tight-fisted.
