Volos mayor appeals suspension over match-fixing trial

Volos mayor appeals suspension over match-fixing trial

Achilleas Beos on Monday appealed a decision to suspend from his post as mayor of Volos in central Greece.

The controversial businessman was informed he could no longer carry out his duties as he is due to stand trial for allegedly being part of a ring that fixed soccer matches when he was the chairman of local team Olympiakos Volos.

He has lodged an appeal with the Council of State, the country's highest administrative court, arguing that his suspension is a violation of his right to be presumed innocent and will cause problems in the running of his municipality.

The trial of Beos and his fellow suspects has been scheduled for April 15, 2016.
