Police officers, ticket inspectors attacked in central Athens

Two police officers of the motorcycle-riding DIAS squad and three ticket inspectors were attacked on Monday night by suspected participants of a protest rally in central Athens.

The first incident occurred on Patission Street when about 20 hooded men assaulted a team of two DIAS officers with sticks and rocks as they approached the rally, which consisted of dozens of motorcycles. It is believed the officers had been dispatched to keep an eye on the protest that is thought to have been organized by self-styled anarchists. One officer received an injury on his hand when he came off his motorcycle.

In the second incident, which authorities say may have been related, about a dozen men in helmets attacked three ticket inspectors at the Omonia metro station, located just a few hundred meters away.

The three inspectors are being treated for injuries at the capital’s Evangelismos Hospital.
