Susan Sarandon pledges to spread word about refugee crisis

Ahead of leaving Greece following a brief stay in the country, actress Susan Sarandon urged people to view the refugee crisis as a humanitarian issue rather than political problem.

Sarandon visited the temporary reception center at the former Olympic Games site in Elliniko, southern Athens, on Christmas Day, after returning from her visit to Lesvos, where she saw firsthand the humanitarian effort aimed at migrants and refugees arriving on the island.

“The most important thing for me is for people to understand that the Greek organizations and the people who are coming to help, from all over Greece and the world, have managed to save these people,” she said after spending an hour at the camp in Elliniki.

“It is a huge problem and I believe they are doing the best they can.”

Sarandon also met Alternate Minister for Migration Policy Yiannis Mouzalas in Athens, a few days after the pair talked on Lesvos.

“We had a very deep and friendly conversation to the degree that this can happen within just one hour,” he said.
