Prosecutor issues charges in frigate upgrade investigation
Eight officials who worked at the Defense Ministry face charges of breach of faith concerning a contract to improve six Greek Navy frigates 13 years ago after a prosecutor completed his investigation into the case.
Judicial officials also indicated that the defense minister at the time, Yiannos Papantoniou, should also be investigated by Parliament, which has to decide whether to lift his immunity.
The probe looked into a deal signed in February 2003 to modernize six “S” class frigates. Officials are accused of securing an agreement that cost Greek taxpayers tens of millions more than it should have.
