Kareli trial begins in Thessaloniki

Thirteen prison guards went on trial on Monday in connection to the death of Albanian inmate Ilia Kareli in Nigrita Prison, northern Greece, in March 2014.

The suspects allegedly beat and tortured Kareli to death.

Kareli was transferred to Nigrita Prison in March 2014 after killing a guard with a piece of glass at Malandrino Prison, central Greece.

An autopsy showed he died from massive injuries provoked by the beating.
