Quake-hit Lefkada schools to get repair funding

The island of Lefkada is to receive 500,000 euros of taxpayers’ money to mend the damage done to local schools during a strong earthquake on November 17.

Education Minister Nikos Filis on Friday signed the decision to transfer the funds to the Municipality of Lefkada so they can be used to carry out repairs at 25 schools.

A tremor measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck the Ionian island late last year, causing damage to dozens of buildings.

Two schools, a junior high in Vasiliki and a nursery, were deemed unsafe for children to re-enter before repair work is carried out.
