Supreme Court orders retrial over 1999 stock ‘bubble’

Thirty-six people who were acquitted of suspicious trading on the Athens Stock Exchange in 1999 should be tried again, the Supreme Court has decided.

The decision by Greece’s highest court overturns a ruling by the Athens Criminal Appeals Court, which acquitted the 36 suspects, including investors and brokers, of all charges relating to the so-called stock market “bubble.”

The Supreme Court judges reviewing the decision ruled that there were flaws in its reasoning and that the suspects should be retried.
