Greek president calls for debt relief after ECB visit
Greece will live up to its bailout commitments but its lenders must also keep their pledge to restructure the country’s debt, President Prokopis Pavlopoulos said after meeting European Central Bank President Mario Draghi in Frankfurt on Tuesday.
Pavlopoulos was accompanied by Bank of Greece Governor Yannis Stournaras on his visit to the ECB headquarters.
“Greece will do what it has to in order to live up to what it promised as a party of the third program,” said Pavlopoulos after the talks.
“After the review, which has to be completed as soon as possible so that we can make use of the first signs of growth that are already visible, our lenders will also have to fulfill their obligations,” he added, stressing the need for Greece’s public debt to be restructured and the ECB to reinstate the waiver on Greek bonds.
