Government reacts to Varoufakis’s ‘Plan X’ comments

The leftist-led government has reacted to an interview with Yanis Varoufakis in which the former finance minister said that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had instructed him to put together a small team of people to draw up a plan for introducing a parallel currency if Greece was unable to reach a deal with foreign lenders on a new bailout.

“The credibility of the decisions made by Mr. Varoufakis during the negotiation has been judged on all levels,” government sources said Wednesday adding that Greek voters had knowledge of the deal ahead of the elections that followed.

Speaking on Skai TV’s “Istories” (Stories) program late Tuesday, Varoufakis outlined what was known as Plan X. He said that a small team of about six people examined the various parameters surrounding a potential standoff that would lead to Greece being unable to meet its obligations.

Among the issues examined by Varoufakis and his advisers were how the country would continue to have access to medicines, fuel and food under such circumstances.
