Snap elections not on agenda, gov’t says

Olga Gerovasili on Saturday sought to quash growing speculation about the possibility of snap elections in the not-too-distant future, saying the government is not considering such an option.

“The government has a recent popular mandate and is battling in exactly the manner it promised to Greek citizens in the summer, when they placed their trust in it to handle the situation,” she told Mega TV.

“There is no question of snap elections.”

Gerovasili also insisted that there is no issue of SYRIZA MPs not supporting the government’s pension reforms.

The coalition’s three-seat majority and the pressure from lenders for deeper cuts to pensions has prompted speculation that the government may not survive much longer or that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras may even opt to go to the polls again.
