Police in Athens on Sunday were questioning an Albanian man who they suspect stabbed and killed a 43-year-old Greek in the early hours of Saturday.

According to one line of inquiry investigators are pursuing, the two men allegedly got into a violent altercation in downtown Athens over who had hailed a cab first.

The 43-year-old collapsed onto the sidewalk on the corner of Stadiou and Kolokotroni streets, just off Syntagma Square.

An ambulance was called to the scene and doctors trying to save the victim’s life found that he had been stabbed several times in the throat and chest.
