Weapons, explosives found on cargo ship off Crete
Port authorities in the Aegean island of Crete on Friday seized two containers from a Togo-flagged cargo ship after discovering a large amount of illegal weapons and explosives.
The ship was sailing off the coast of Crete and was escorted to Souda Bay by port authorities, who had deemed it suspicious. A search of its cargo uncovered one container holding 6,400 short-barreled shotguns and another with large quantities of explosive materials.
A further search of the vessel with the help of a K-9 unit did not uncover any other contraband such as drugs, but an investigation into the guns and explosives is under way.
