Ship carrying arms and explosives was headed to Lebanon and west Africa

A freighter that was intercepted last week by the coast guard off the western coast of Crete and escorted to the port of the Souda in Hania, was revealed on Friday to be carrying shotguns and explosives.

Port officials confiscated 6,400 shotguns and a large cache of explosives, found in two containers on board the Togo-flagged Trader.

According to police, the ship, with an 11-man crew, belonged to a powerful smuggling network working out of Lebanon, Syria and Greece.

The Trader had left the port of Izmir in Turkey on February 4 and was on its way to Lebanon before heading off to Ghana and Cameroon.
