Draghi to be awarded Athens University doctorate
European Central Bank President Mario Draghi is to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Athens.
The decision was taken by the professors in the university’s Department of Economics in a near-unanimous vote on Wednesday, Kathimerini understands.
The 68-year-old Italian economist became ECB president in November 2011.
He graduated from the Sapienza University of Rome and earned a PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He was full professor at the University of Florence’s Cesare Alfieri School of Political Science from 1981 until 1994 and fellow of the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government in 2001.
The decision to award Draghi an honorary doctorate comes nine months after capital controls were imposed in Greece, which caused some professors to have reservations about honoring the central bank president.
