Court rules reduction to lump-sum payments in civil service legal
Cuts to the lump-sum payment for retiring civil servants that were made as part of Greece’s previous bailout commitments were legal, according to a decision issued on Friday by the full assembly of the Council of State.
In a majority verdict, the judges at Greece’s highest administrative court deemed that the cuts were part of a broader fiscal adjustment effort and the reform of the country’s pension system.
As such, the reductions “served the public interest and not the financial interests of the public sector and the pension funds.”
