Police makes major haul of bootleg booze

A Greek man and two Bulgarian nationals were arrested on Thursday for alcohol smuggling in the Korydallos suburb of Athens.

Police broke the smuggling ring after stopping a truck, driven by the 57-year-old Greek, for a routine inspection. A search of the truck yielded 3,536 bottles of alcoholic drinks and sticker labels of various alcohol brands without the prerequisite documentation.

The two Bulgarians, who police said were the ringleaders, were following the truck and were also arrested shortly afterward.

Police confiscated the truck, 7,800 euros, three mobile phones and large number of labels.

The bottles were handed over to Athens customs to ascertain the amount in lost taxes and other fees while the three men appeared before a Piraeus prosecutor.
