‘Car crash’ racket busted
At least 40 suspects are believed to be involved in a racket that tricked dozens of elderly people into paying more than 600,000 euros to ostensibly help a family member involved in a traffic accident, police in Thessaloniki said Thursday, following the arrest of the two suspected masterminds, both Bulgarian men, aged 27 and 30.
The gang is said to have hoodwinked at least 100 people in Thessaloniki, netting 641,000 euros in cash, 200 gold coins and jewelry. Its members also tried to trick some 300 targets in other parts of the country.
Gang members would call the target claiming that someone close to the victim had been involved in a crash and would receive medical treatment in exchange for cash.
