Estonia gets 7 refugees from Greece under EU relocation plan
Estonia says it has received from Greece the first seven of up to 550 refugees that the Baltic country has pledged to admit under a European Union relocation plan.
Interior Ministry spokeswoman Marje Klopets said five members of an Iraqi family, one man from Syria and another man from Yemen arrived Tuesday in Estonia.
They will be housed in the capital, Tallinn, and the country’s second city of Tartu and receive initial one-year residence permits.
The ministry last week urged Estonians to welcome the newcomers to the Baltic country of 1.3 million, where many citizens are unaccustomed to foreigners.
Estonia is the last of the three Baltic countries to receive refugees under the EU’s relocation plan. Lithuania received its first refugees in December and Latvia in February. [AP]
