Actress Vanessa Redgrave visits Piraeus camp, hosting nearly 6,000 migrants

British actress and political activist Vanessa Redgrave visited the Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sand Frontieres) medical clinic at the port of Piraeus on Wednesday.

The clinic treats hundreds of refugees who are staying at the camp that has been created around the port’s passenger terminal.

Redgrave, who was accompanied by American playwright and screenwriter Martin Sherman, on her visit, during which they spoke with a pregnant woman from Afghanistan who recounted the story of her journey to Greece.

Greek authorities said on Wednesday that there were 5,815 refugees and migrants at the Piraeus camp, which was visited earlier this month by American actress Angelina Jolie.

Redgrave took part in the Hellenic Film Academy awards on Monday, from where she criticized the European Union’s response to the refugee crisis and praised the way Greeks are helping migrants.

"You are amazing because you remember that these refugees are mothers, fathers, children, human beings and that is what not a single European government has done,” she said. “Shame on Europe!”
