Karatzaferis and Baltakos launch right-wing National Unity party

The former leader of the ultranationalist LAOS party, Giorgos Karatzaferis, and ex-cabinet secretary Panayiotis Baltakos on Friday launched their new right-wing nationalist party, National Unity (Ethniki Enotita).

The new party will be chaired by Karatzaferis, with Baltakos as general secretary.

It aspires to occupy the political space between New Democracy, now under conservative liberal Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and the openly neofascist Golden Dawn.

Karatzaferis said National Unity aims to woo disaffected voters from these two parties, as well as former officials.

He added that the new group is currently in talks with former ND ministers Argyris Dinopoulos and Yiannis Michelakis.

Karatzaferis also unveiled the new party’s logo, a flaming torch, a now-ditched ND trademark.
