Leftist Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Wednesday accused New Democracy opposition of “pursuing a far-right agenda” by seeking to connect the ongoing refugee crisis with the threat of terrorism.

“You are taking a xenophobic line… Your intention is to go fishing in the murky waters of a far-right pool,” Tsipras said during a parliamentary debate on security, which was requested by the conservative opposition.

He said the conservative opposition was playing into public concerns about security in a bid to galvanize New Democracy's hard right faction.

Earlier this month, the former leader of the ultranationalist LAOS party, Giorgos Karatzaferis, and ex-cabinet secretary Panayiotis Baltakos launched a new right-wing nationalist party, National Unity, aspiring to occupy the political space between New Democracy and the openly neofascist Golden Dawn.
