Row over probe into prosecutor takes new turn

Appeals court prosecutor Georgia Tsatani, under scrutiny for her handling of a probe into businessman Andreas Vgenopoulos and his role in the collapse of Laiki Bank in Cyprus, is at odds again with Supreme Court president Vassiliki Thanou.

Tsatani recently forced Thanou to step down as the head of the inquiry. The judicial official had earlier complained that the country’s top judge had no right to appoint herself to the position.

Now Tsatani is challenging the appointment of Supreme Court vice president Aspasia Karellou to oversee the investigation. Tsatani claims that Karellou was appointed directly by Thanou, without the proper process being followed.
