New amendment expected after plans to turn seaside stadium into courthouse ditched
An amendment approved by the House allowing for the use of a beach volleyball stadium built for the 2004 Olympics in Faliro, southern Athens, as courtrooms is being revoked by the government following strong opposition by local authorities.
The move was initially meant to tackle the issue of a shortage of courtroom space for major cases such as that of the Golden Dawn trial. Following a meeting between cabinet ministers and Attica Governor Rena Dourou – who opposed the decision – at Maximos Mansion on Tuesday, the administration announced that a building owned by the Defense Ministry, located at Rouf, would be used instead.
A new amendment is expected to be tabled in the coming days.
