Prosecutors order ex-hospital chief to be remanded in custody, release wife

The former director of the Henry Dunant Hospital in northern Athens was remanded yesterday after testifying for more than three hours in connection with accusations that he laundered 3.2 million deutschemark he had received nearly two decades ago as a bribe from a German hospital outfitter.

Andreas Martinis told corruption prosecutors that he is not guilty of laundering the money through offshore companies (the statute of limitations on the bribery charge has expired), insisting that the money was legally acquired and taxed.

Martinis’s wife Georgia, who has also been indicted in relation to the same case and claimed that the money in question was a family inheritance, was released by the court on bail of 600,000 euros.
