Fire breaks out northeast of Athens

Firefighters on Monday were trying to put out a blaze that broke out around midday in a remote part of Varnava in Marathon, northeast of Athens.

The fire was burning in a remote part of the district, located between the local cemetery and a landfill, with firefighters saying that it was not threatening and residences.

Authorities are on alert as a heat wave that has gripped the country since Friday has raised the risk of fires.
