New Democracy hails Spain election result

Greece’s conservative opposition has welcomed the results of Sunday’s repeat general election in Spain which saw acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s centre-right People’s Party (PP) emerge with the single biggest bloc of seats.

“Mariano Rajoy’s clear victory in Spain is an answer to populism,” New Democracy said in a statement. “At the same time, the clear defeat of Podemos shows that the citizens of Europe are turning their backs on those who campaign on false promises,” it added.

The PP won 137 seats, short of the 176 needed for an outright majority. The centre-left Socialist Party placed second while Unidos Podemos (United We Can) – which brings together Podemos, communists and greens, came in third.
