Serious financial consequences
Eastern Attica prefectural council President Dionysis Papoutsis has pointed out the considerable financial repercussions that will result from the shoddy planning and delays in constructing the Olympic marathon route. Papoutsis, who is a candidate for Parliament with the main opposition New Democracy party, said part of the completed section of the route has already been destroyed, while the design includes no provisions for overhead or underground crossings for local residents in areas the route passes through. As a result, several towns, such as Nea Makri and Marathon, have been split down the middle. The delays (no work has been done for some weeks) are causing even more problems for local residents and business owners.
