Arson blitz targets parties
Five local offices belonging to Greece’s main political parties were damaged during a 15-minute arson blitz in Athens early yesterday, in the largest-scale attack so far this year by suspected anarchist groups. Nobody was injured by the crude, gas-canister incendiary devices, but the New Democracy and PASOK offices suffered extensive damage. By late yesterday, nobody had claimed responsibility for the attacks. The first explosion was at 1.50 a.m., at an ND office in Kallithea. Three minutes later, another bomb went off at an ND office in Neo Psychico, followed by a third explosion at 2 a.m. outside a PASOK office in Hymettus. After six minutes, a gas-canister bomb went off at a PASOK office in Melissia, while at about the same time a fire broke out in an ND office in Moschato. Police believe the last attack was part of the blitz, which was attributed to anarchist groups. On Thursday, a group naming itself after the Olympic mascots, Phevos and Athena, claimed responsibility for the burning of two government trucks in Aghioi Anargyroi.
