Top prosecutor wants Psycharis trial reprieve reversed

Supreme Court prosecutor Xeni Dimitriou on Wednesday called for the reversal of a court decision to postpone the trial of media magnate Stavros Psycharis on charges of submitting inaccurate source of income (“pothen esches”) declarations.

The court had deemed that it was unclear whether the inaccuracies were accidental or the result of deceit.

Dimitriou opined that the court’s decision was wrong and that the inaccuracies were the result of deceit.

The court’s criminal section is to decide on whether the trial should proceed.

Last week Parliament’s transparency and ethics committee, which is conducting an investigation into the funding of political parties and media organizations, voted to relieve Psycharis, 71, from having to testify in the probe due to his fragile health.

The decision by the committee came after Psycharis – head of the Lambrakis Press Group (DOL), which owns Ta Nea newspaper, among others – submitted a letter saying he is suffering from Parkinson’s disease and that he has recently undergone heart surgery.
