New twist in probe into deadly boat crash off Aegina
DNA samples taken from the steering gear of the speedboat that collided with a tourist vessel off the coast of Aegina in August killing four people, do no match that of the skipper, who was remanded in custody, according to local media reports on Monday.
The latest twist in the tragedy came after new forensic evidence suggested the presence of at least two other people at the wheel when the accident occurred.
Captain Thrasyvoulos Lykourezos stands accused of failing to alert authorities on time after the accident, although he was aware that human lives were in danger.
The court also ruled that the skipper’s transfer to shore following the accident was aimed at facilitating an eventual escape.
The 77-year-old turned himself in and was arrested by coast guard officers two-and-a-half hours after the crash.
