Turkish jets violate Greek airspace in the Aegean
Two Turkish fighter jets entered the Athens Flight Information Region (FIR), carrying out a total of four violations of Greek airspace in the northeastern and southeastern Aegean, authorities said on Tuesday.
According to the National Defense General Staff (GEETHA), the Turkish jets were not flying in formation and were not armed.
There were no dogfights, defense officials added, noting that all the jets were identified and intercepted according to international law.
The incident comes amid reports that last month Turkish Navy submarines entered Greek territorial waters in the Aegean repeatedly and following statements by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other government officials disputing the Treaty of Lausanne, which sets the borders of modern Turkey after the fall of the Ottoman Empire.
