Woman carrying more than 2 mln euros arrested at Athens airport

A Russian woman was arrested at Athens International Airport on Saturday after customs officials found that she was carrying more than 2 million euros in cash that had not been declared.

According to the authorities, the woman, who had arrived on a flight from Moscow, had hidden 2.2 million euros and almost 60,000 dollars in her baggage and beneath her clothes. The cash was seized by customs officers.

Under a 2005 law, 25 percent of the total cash (some 555,000 euros) will be automatically seized, while the remainder will also be confiscated if the woman cannot prove that the money has been earned legally.
