A government that is interested in the development of culture is to be judged by the way it deals with education, the cultivation of its citizens. Without this, concern about culture is at best government public relations at European events and at worst a mixture of volunteerism and Calatrava. No contemporary work of art can give our life meaning today and become a common point of reference if funds for education are not increased and respect for nature is not cultivated. Inestimable work If we don’t treat teachers with love and respect, for the inestimable work they do in helping our children, and also archaeologists, those modern heroes, who resist the profiteering mania of Greeks for building wherever they fancy. What a government can do for culture is to increase the Education Ministry’s budget.
