ND spokesman criticizes Georgiadis’s comments

New Democracy spokesman Giorgos Koumoutsakos has criticized controversial comments made by the party’s deputy president Adonis Georgiadis which prompted a reaction from the Greek Communist Party (KKE).

“It was obviously a wrong statement,” Koumoutsakos said Tuesday adding that Georgiadis had retracted his comments.

Speaking to party supporters on the Aegean island of Chios on Monday, Georgiadis allegedly said: “If you visit any place in the world and say you are a communist, they put you in jail. In Greece, it’s the opposite.”

His comments were condemned by KKE, ruling SYRIZA party and some conservative officials.
