Spokeswoman says ‘nothing will stand in government’s way’ on TV licenses

Government spokeswoman Olga Gerovassili said in the wake of a Council of State verdict deeming a recent TV license auction unconstitutional, that “nothing will stand in the way of the government’s determination to bring some order to the radio and television landscape.”

The statement, made just moments after judges at the country’s highest administrative court overturned a broadcasting license auction conducted by State Minister Nikos Pappas in September, was particularly critical of the authority. The Council of State, Gerovassili suggested, is the same court that deemed the bailout deal with international creditors “that destroyed Greece” as constitutional and upheld the closure of state broadcaster ERT in 2013.

Gerovassili also added that the government will be submitting a new broadcasting regulation on Monday.
