Greece ranks high in road, rail fatalities, EU data show
Greece was second to last in the 2016 edition of the European Union Transport scoreboard which compares the performance of 28 member-states in 30 transport-related categories.
According to the data, Greece was well above the EU average in the number of road fatalities with a rate of 75 deceased people per million inhabitants. The EU average stood at 52. Malta had the lowest number of fatalities, reporting just 26 deaths per million inhabitants.
Meanwhile, Greece ranked eighth in the number of rail fatalities, with 1.2 deaths per million train kilometers. Denmark, Germany, the UK, Ireland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands scored the lowest rate at 0.1.
The scoreboard also includes other rankings such as the number of women employed in the transport sector and consumer satisfaction with urban, rail and air transport. It also measures transport indicators regarding the internal market, investments, innovation and infrastructure.
