Police find bag of Molotov cocktails near Athens soccer stadium
Greek police, on high alert for the ongoing visit of outgoing US President Barack Obama, are investigating a bag of makeshift firebombs found outside a soccer stadium near central Athens.
The bag containing an unspecified number of Molotov cocktails was found outside a school near the Panionios soccer stadium in the suburb of Nea Smyrni, one of the areas that is under a tight security cordon as it is located along the route between Obama’s hotel and the city center.
Authorities told the ANA-MPA news agency that the firebombs were probably intended for a protest rally in the run-up to the November 17 anniversary of the student uprising against the 1967-1974 military dictatorship, and may not be connected to the US president’s visit.
